unforgettable croatia - why do ordinary
by Sabrina larson
I had the opportunity to experience an Unforgettable Croatia cruise – Croatia is the emerging destination that everyone is talking about!
We arrived a day prior to cruise day and stayed at the Sheraton Riviera Close to Mlini. Between the airport and Dubrovnik old town.
Unforgettable Croatia private transfer waited for an hour for us as Air Croatia was delayed.
The resort is beautiful, on a small bay, with a beautiful walkway full of bars, gelaterie and restaurants. The beach has pebbles, however close by in Kupari there is a sand beach.
Restaurant food average, but breakfast buffet was excellent.
Unforgettable Croatia {UC} private transfer took us to the Harbour of Gruz, where the boat Memories was docked. The passengers were half from the UK and half from East Coast-US, and a couple of Canadians.
Pietro Molica Lazzaro surprised me by assigning to us the Owners Suite.
Memories is a very nice yacht that has 18 cabins, some with private balcony, and an Owner Suite.
After a refreshment and some snacks, they took us to Dubrovnik old town, UNESCO Heritage site.
The guide provided by UC was outstanding. She grew up in the old town with an insight of how the city has changed since she was a kid.
In the evening, we were back aboard Memories for a 3-course meal.
We sailed out towards Slano, but first we passed in front of Dubrovnik to admire it from the sea.
Subsequently, we stopped in a secluded bay for a couple of hours for swimming and fun in the water.
After lunch we were taken to Ston, a salty bay that was used in the past as salt collecting storage. Nowadays, it is an oyster and mussels’ farm.
We got to see how differently mussels and oysters have to be raised, and then….oyster and mussels tasting!!! Originally, we were supposed to try 4 oysters each, but at the end of the visit I had had 9 oysters, and I do not know how many mussels.
The evening ended up with the captain’s dinner and a welcome party that ended at 2:30 AM.
Today we sailed towards the island of Mljet. Early morning we visited the Mljet National Park famous for two salty lakes. Many cruise fellows were hung over from the night before, but those who were not, like Marc and I and some other people, rented bikes and biked the park. WE had a blast.
After lunch we arrived in precious Korcula, a UNESCO Heritage site, that together with Dubrovnik were my favorite locations. It is said that the famous figure of Marco Polo was from this little Medieval town. I do not believe it because Italians maintain he was from Venice. Aside from this little diatribe, the town is a real gem. Again, we had a very good guide with a very funny sense of humor.
In the evening, we headed inland, in the countryside, to enjoy the typical countryside food PEKA, very similar to Hawaiian way of cooking pork. It was delicious!!!
In the morning, we stopped outside of Korkula for a second swim stop. UC pulled down the boat a jet sky that let some of the passengers take a tour, with a crew member, who in wintertime works as a stunt man in the UK.
In the afternoon we reached Hvar.
We visited the winery Tomic (excellent wines that cost way less than Italian or French wines). The visit lasted an hour, then we took a tour of Hvar.
That evening it was scheduled for the passengers to have dinner on their own in town. Not only did UC provided us with a pocket size booklet with restaurant recommendation throughout Croatia, but they also gave us a card that allowed us to have a 10% discount on those recommended restaurants.
In the morning, we reached Split. The passengers from the UK left in the morning. Only the US guests were left.
We took a bus that took us early morning to Krka National park.
Krka is about an hour away from Split.
The park has beautiful waterfalls and ponds full of trout. This was the busiest place we encountered.
Luckily, UC organized it very early in the morning to avoid waiting for our turn to enter the park. (The park has a system of allowing only so many busses or visitors per hour.)
We stopped outside of Split to have lunch.
In the afternoon we visited another lovely medieval town: Trogir, UNESCO Heritage site.
In the evening, we were free to roam the streets of Split and have dinner on our own.
Our Easy Jet plane was scheduled for the afternoon. We left the luggage in the boat, and we headed to visit Diocletian’s Palace.
Being at the apex of European summer holidays, the city was full of people, particularly Spaniards and Italians…including me. LOL.
At 12:30 we were picked up by the private transfer organized by UC and we headed to Split airport for our return.
Croatia besides being a fantastic country to visit, very safe even for single tourists or women traveling solo, is a very good alternative to southern Italy but mainly to Greece.
Getting to Croatia -
There is a seasonal direct flight from Newark to Duborvnik offered by Air Croatia. Direct flights are only on certain days of the week.
Alternatively, a good way to reach Croatia would be to fly into Rome, overnight or spend a couple days, and take Air Croatia to Dubrovnik (flight is 1 hour 10 minutes) or, fly over London. The three London airports offer many flights to Dubrovnik and Split. Length of flights: 2.5 hours.
Unforgettable Croatia -
Unforgettable Croatia boat crew has worked with Princess; Viking; AMA Waterways
Cruise Director Milan Miletich works in the summer for Unforgettable Croatia, and Spring and Fall for AMA Waterways.
Company owner Graham flew down two days to meet with all of us and give us the information about company expansion. They just opened an office in Melbourne; will add Iceland to their destinations; Scandinavia, specifically for ice and glass hotels to see Northern Lights.
The level of food and alcohol onboard is very high.
Quality of service, attention to details, and customer satisfaction were outstanding.
